Where to Eat in Singapore – Jaggi’s Northern Indian Cuisine

Well know for it variety of cuisine’s and authentic flavours, its quite strange to find the lack of quality and flavourful Punjabi cuisine in Singapore. However, all is not lost. Tucked away in the middle of an over populated row of Indian Restaurants in Little India  is Jaggi’s Northern Indian Cuisine.

Established a century ago as a small hawker stall catering to the port labour force near the harbour, it has grown into a much sought out restaurant in the last four years or so. It stands out mainly for its rich authenticity and deep flavours, hardly found in most Northern Indian restaurants around town.

Serving typical Punjabi dishes such as Sheesh Kebabs, Butter Chicken, Mutton Kheema, Moongi di dhall, Aloo Matter, Sahi Paneer, Eggplant Partha, Saag Porji and Stuffed Capsicum, it can be rather hard to choose from. Every dish is laden with just the right amount of spices providing a burst of flavour in each spoonful of curry and rice.

A must try is their famous Butter Chicken that overflows in creamy texture. If loads of cream isn’t your cup of tea, try their succulent lamb and chicken kebabs instead.The best way to end a meal at Jaggi’s is to try one of their desserts. Soaked in rose flavoured sugar syrup, warm flour balls called Gulab Jamun is just the right way to go.

Unlike most Northern Indian restaurants on the island, Jaggi’s isn’t elaborately decorated nor is it decked up with fancy furniture. Its a simple get-up that offers a homely feel to its patrons. Food is ordered at the counter, paid for up-front and works on a more self service basis. Though lacking in interior design, it more than makes up for in its food and decent pricing.

A meal for two with a lavish spread of two meat dishes, three vegetarian dishes, rice and desserts could set you back approximately SGD30.00 (USD23.00).

Jaggi’s Northern Indian Cuisine is located at 34/36 Race Course Road, Singapore 218 553. The restaurant is normally closed during mid day with opening hours divided into two timing: Monday through Saturday from 11.30am – 3pm and 6pm – 10.30pm | Sunday from 10.30am – 3.30pm and 6pm – 10.30pm.

Wow. Can I just say wow. Thank you so much for this article. The wife and I absolutely love Indian food (but due to where we live we hardly ever get good Indian). So when we arrived to Singapore today we googled Indian restaurants and came across this review so we decided to give it a try. Our theory being, if these people make Indian a destination while on vacation (including in Hoi Ann the home of the most delicious vietnamese pancakes I’ve ever tried), I figure they must be on to something. Jaggi’s was amazing, and I do not say that lightly. In fact most of our friends probably think we hate Indian food since we never say we like it, we are that critical (I’ve now come to the conclusion that we really like Northern Indian/Punjab). Thank you again, absolutely amazing, the butter chicken was 100% the way butter chicken should taste, and I’ve not experienced that at a single restaurant outside of my absolute favorite one in Calgary (where I would highly recommend as an Indian food destination)…..
